A purpose-built general practice designed for clinical function and patient experience

Project Overview

Concept Health delivered a new 400 sqm medical centre for Mooroolbark Station Medical Centre, transforming a former bank tenancy at 14-16 Brice Avenue into a fully operational general practice. The project required a complete change of use, navigating building approval complexity while delivering a space purpose-built for clinical workflow and patient comfort.

Client Vision

Dr Peggy and Dr Hamed were establishing their practice from the ground up, with a clear vision for how their clinic should look, feel, and function. Their brief called for a space that reflected their new brand identity, accommodated a full suite of clinical and administrative functions, and created a welcoming environment for patients of all ages.

Planning & Clinical Function

The 400 sqm floorplate was carefully planned to house 10 consult rooms, a procedure room, treatment room, and pathology room, alongside a reception and waiting area with a dedicated children’s zone. Staff facilities include a private office and staff area, with DDA and ambulant compliant toilets and refurbished existing amenities. Thick walls retained from the original bank structure were repurposed as integrated storage, turning a site constraint into a practical clinical asset.

Design Approach

The design drew inspiration from Australian natural landscapes, translating the serenity of coastal flora into a warm, calming clinical environment. Sage green and soft timber tones anchor the reception area, while shades of blue carry through the consult and treatment rooms, creating a consistent sense of calm throughout the patient journey. Herringbone flooring and timber slat detailing add moments of considered quality without compromising clinical practicality. Australian-made products including Signature Floors, Polytec, Laminex, Krost, and Level Furniture were specified throughout.

Delivery Approach

The change of use from bank to medical centre introduced building approval requirements that added both programme and cost complexity. Concept Health managed compliance coordination and site challenges through the delivery process, keeping the project on track and ensuring the finished space met all clinical and regulatory requirements.

Outcome

The completed centre gave Dr Peggy and Dr Hamed the practice environment they had envisioned, purpose-built for clinical function and designed to welcome patients from day one.
